Aboard the USS New York for Veterans Day

Mikro and Kev enjoyed climbing aboard an AAV-7 (amphibious assault vehicle), a riverboat, an LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushioned), a deuce and a half truck, and an Osprey VTOL aircraft aboard the USS New York on Veterans Day. They also got to check out the small arms, and got a look at a Cobra attack helicopter up on the flight deck.

We all took the opportunity to thank the sailors and marines on duty for their service to our country.

My Dad served in the US Navy during the Korean War, and I am glad Mikro got a look at what life on a Navy ship is like.

Papermaking Workshop at the Library

Our library has the coolest programs for kids! Earlier this month, they got to make a piece of paper and collage onto it with tissue paper and methyl-cellulose glue. Their creations were amazing! Mikro made an oval sheet of paper, which we thought looked a bit like an egg. So his collage is a baby dragon emerging from the egg. His friend E is lobbying her parents for a pet bunny rabbit, so her collage features a bunny. And I thought the piece of oval paper I made looked like a fish bowl, so that's what I made.

Plans Derailed -- Literally-- So Here Comes a Catch Up Post

Mikro was supposed to be at the Metropolitan Museum of Art today, on a field trip with his Comparative Religions class. Unfortunately, Metro North still hasn't gotten the Hudson Line back on track after Sunday's tragic derailment. So travel into the city was not in the cards today...

I suppose it is only appropriate that I post some photos from his last Comparative Religions field trip to the American Museum of Natural History. When forced to stay home, I can actually get around to editing photos and blogging. So I guess that's my attempt at finding a silver lining...

The class has been looking at early religions such as animism, totemism and shamanism, so their journey through the AMNH focused on artifacts that illustrated the things they have been studying.

The AMNH is so much more than dinosaur bones (though we love those, of course, especially my paleo geek boy...) It was fun to tour some of the anthropological collections for a change!
