Lunar New Year Parade

When Mikro was a toddler, I let him watch PBS Kids, and one of his favorite shows was Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat. Watching it, he developed a lingering fascination with China and all things Chinese. I thought that he would really enjoy celebrating Chinese New Year, so we took a trip down to Chinatown for the annual Lunar New Year Parade.

(Sorry to be posting these so late, but the big snowstorm left us without power or heat for several days, so I am just now getting a chance to go through the photos...)

Here come the Dragon Dancers...

I'm 44 years old, and this is the first time I ever celebrated Chinese New Year. Just one more reason why I love homeschooling!

More Dutch NY and the Silk Road for Good Measure

More Quadricentennial: We toured the Bard Graduate Center's Dutch New York: Between East and West, the World of Margrieta van Varick exhibit with our homeschool group. It was wonderful, and I wish I could show you photos, but alas, the objects were on loan from other collections and no photography was permitted. Mikro enjoyed it very much.

Of course, he also enjoyed playing in Central Park with a bunch of the kids. Afterwards, when we were all frozen popsicles, Mikro and I walked to 81st Street and visited the AMNH again! We saw the Hall of Reptiles, and then took in the new exhibit, Traveling the Silk Road, which was fascinating. Mikro especially enjoyed the live silkworms and the description of silk making. He also loved the video of stories from the Silk Road, and the lifesize camel models. He was fading a bit by the last section of the exhibit (Baghdad). If we get a chance, I'd like to go back. Again, no photos allowed, unfortunately.

Red Hawk Native American Dancers at the Paramount

We saw the wonderful Red Hawk Native American Dancers at Peekskill's Paramount Center for the Arts with Tri-County HomeSchoolers. Mikro really enjoyed the show this year, especially since he has been studying the Iroquois and other local tribes and had some background to relate the experience to. He got up on the stage and joined in dancing the Iroquois Smoke Dance. It looks more like manic hopping than dancing, but he enjoyed himself!
