World Science Festival: Street Fair, Apprenticeships, and Cool Jobs

This year, in addition to the WSF Street Festival, we signed Mikro up to do two apprenticeship programs: Neurologist's Apprentice (dissecting a sheep brain) and Archaeologist's Apprentice (learning about nondestructive 3d modeling of artifacts in situ and doing a faux dig), and got tickets for the always awesome Cool Jobs panel. This year they had a roboticist, an evolutionary biologist who studies leeches and other parasites, two archaeologists, and an astronaut. I love how passionate they are about their fields, and how they were once science loving geeky kids, and are full of encouragement for the young people in the audience. Michael Massimino, the astronaut, emphasized the value of never ever giving up and always following your dreams. I think that is a message everyone can benefit from!

Unfortunately, Mikro didn't take a single photo at either of his apprentice programs. He was too busy learning and having fun to even think about the camera in his pocket.

So here are some photos from the rest of the day, and I will link the videos of Cool Jobs and the Flame Challenge: What Is Color at the end.

Enjoy!

World Science Festival 2013

Mikro had a blast at the World Science Festival. Highlights were helping physicist Max Tegmark on stage at the What Is Time panel hosted by Alan Alda, the always cool Cool Jobs panel, high tech and robotics at Innovation Square, and the Science Street Fair, featuring the much loved Bio Bus and booths from many other museums and attractions.

Mikro's 15 minutes (if time is slowed down to about half speed at the black hole he "visited") comes at 43:58 to 50:13.

And here is the Cool Jobs panel:

Mikro wants to be an evolutionary biologist or paleontologist. He loves science, and I love being able to expose him to different disciplines, and now-grownup former science loving kids who made their dreams come true, which is just one of the many reasons we are faithful WSF attendees.

Check out some of the many videos on the WSF website, which include many Cool Jobs panels past.
