Greet the Fleet at Peekskill

In connection with the Quadricentennial celebration here in NY, Netherlands sent its Prince and Princess and a fleet of historic ships, some over 100 years old. The Onrust is a replica of the first ship built by Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam. She led the parade into the harbor at Peekskill's Riverfront Green, and returned the salute from the shore. The highlight of the evening was the amazing performance given by a local 11 year old girl, who sang "Hudson Valley Home" and amazed me with her talent and poise. There was also a terrific speech about why history is important. Mikro enjoyed the ships, and was a little disappointed that ship visiting was canceled (they arrived almost 2 hours late due to the lack of wind). But he really enjoyed the huge bouncy castle with climbing walls and steep slide. The ad said activities for kids, and my homeschooling head interpreted that somewhat differently, but Mikro was thrilled.

That is so cool! My son was just reading about New Netherlands and New Amsterdam today, I'll have to show him your post.

So you're homeschooling in NY? You're brave. I heard NY can be a tough state.

I too would have been expecting some learning activities since it was a history event. My son loves those bouncy things too and it probably would have been the highlight of the trip instead of the ships!
