Civil War Weekend at Governors Island

This weekend was Civil War Weekend at Governor's Island National Monument, featuring a soldiers' encampment and historic firearms and artillery drills by the 119th New York Volunteer Historical Association and Battery G of the First Pennsylvania Light Artillery.

There was a recruiting drive, and Mikro enlisted and learned to drill with the other new recruits.

And there was music of the Civil War with Living Historian Joe Korber and Balladeer Linda Russell (my favorite part of the day!)

Just before we left, we checked out the Children's Museum of the Arts' Island Outpost, which offers free summer art activities for kids. Mikro made a fabric mache dinosaur bone.
