Fourth of July Festivities

Last weekend, we celebrated Independence Day at Van Cortlandt Manor, our local historic house, which put on a celebration of the sort that would have occurred in 1800.

Doughty's Artillery Company demonstrated the 18th Century artillery drill, and recruited the kids as Continental soldiers, teaching them elementary musket handling and marching.

The Declaration of Independence was read to the crowd. There was a parade (featuring the mini-militiamen, including Mikro) and patriotic speeches (derived from historical accounts in newspapers of the "early national period") and songs.
