Ancient Math and Binary Make Multiplying and Dividing EASY!

Mikro and I have been doing ancient history this year. We are just starting to talk about multiplication. My husband, a computer professional and massive history geek, sent me this video:

Mikro now says: "So why do we make kids memorize times tables?" Um...

I can see that it's faster one you have the tables memorized, and maybe easier to do without paper and pencil, but woah! It's easier to use the binary method than to *memorize* the tables. You just need to know how to add and double! This is ingenious! And it makes an easy, excellent way to check work done the traditional way... We just spent some time making up problems and playing with this. I am impressed!

This was SUPER cool...'til we tried it. Of course the girls picked a large number, which was not easy to do. Try 2000/8 and see how long it takes you. We gave up after a few minutes of adding and figuring in the doubles of 8 row....it was easier to just divide.
